Google will pay publishers to create and curate high-quality content

A new kind of news experience.

What’s the skinny? Today Google announced a $1billion financial investment in news publishers and the future of news. This initial $1 billion commitment Google has earmarked to pay publishers to create and curate high-quality content for what Google says will be a different kind of online news experience. Google is dubbing this new experience News Showcase.

News Showcase is made up of story panels and will initially appear in Google News on Android. Google also plans to launch its News Showcase on Google News on iOS and eventually make its way to Google Discover and Google Search.

The News Showcase panels will give participating publishers the ability to package the stories within Google’s News product, which Google says will provide deeper storytelling and more context through features like timelines, bullets, and related articles.

News Showcase is launching today in Brazil and Germany and will begin rolling out in other countries in the coming months.

“We’ve signed partnerships for News Showcase with nearly 200 leading publications across Germany, Brazil, Argentina, Canada, the U.K. and Australia. The publications include award-winning national titles like Der Spiegel, Stern, Die Zeit, Folha de S.Paulo, Band and Infobae alongside regionally and locally significant publications such as El Litoral, GZH, WAZ and SooToday. The number of news publications will grow as we work to expand News Showcase to other countries including India, Belgium and the Netherlands.”
