Taking a look at Pop!_OS

Ever spend hours installing and setting up Windows? Or try to keep your system fast and clean of bloatware, only to find Candy Crush back on your system after deleting it multiple times?

I have been using Pop!_OS from System76 since the release of 19.04, about 3 weeks at the time of writing this and I don’t have any plans at this time to remove it from my main pc. It runs really well on my ( Ryzen 2600x b450 mobo and GTX 1060) right out of the box. Check out my review of the GIGABYTE B450 AORUS PRO WIFI for a complete parts list of my test system.

Pop!_OS comes with the latest Nvidia driver for my graphics card. It ran great out of the box with no hiccups. I went to the Pop Shop (app store) after the initial set up was complete and added my favorite programs. Steam is in the Pop Shop so with one click I was able to play some games. I played a few of my favorites and a couple new ones from the steam store.

Pop!_OS 19.04 Updates

19.04 adds some cool new features such as dark mode and slim mode.

-Dark Mode gives your applications a relaxing ambiance for nighttime viewing. Both Dark Mode and Slim Mode can be activated in the Appearance settings menu.

-The Slim Mode option maximizes your screen real estate by reducing the height of the header on application windows

-Pop!_OS has been updated to use version 5.0 of the Linux kernel

-GNOME has been updated to version 3.32

Another great thing about Pop!_OS is their short cut keys. Short cut keys aren’t new but with Pop!_OS they are easy to learn and are documented for you to remember.Check out their list of short cut keys https://pop.system76.com/docs/keyboard-shortcuts/.

Pop!_OS Desktop

The Pop!_OS desktop is clean with a familiar feel to it. I found it fit with my work flow very nicely.

Apps Menu

The apps menu is easy to navigate and looks good in my opinion, again with a familiar feel to it.

Settings Menu

The settings menu is easy to navigate and pretty complete for a standard set up. I did add the dash to dock extension as I really like having the dock on the side of my screen.

Pop Shop

The pop shop is Pop!_OS’s version of a repository. Its where you will find all your favorite apps. I found it to be pretty complete, I have yet to go anywhere else to try and find an app or software I was needing.

Final Thoughts

Overall It’s a great OS, very clean and beautiful. With the base being Ubuntu you have a clean great looking OS with all the perks of Ubuntu. If you have not tried it out, I would highly recommend taking a look at Pop!_OS from System76.
